CSN College Tramore Road Cork,  www.csn.ie 021 4961020

CSN College of Further Education presents their annual Art & Design Graduate Exhibition 2017.  ‘Sense/Ability’, showcases the incredible selection of diverse art and design student work from courses Art 1:2, Art, Craft & Design, Furniture Design & Making, and Digital Media.

Highlights of the course work are displayed in the Gallery at CSN and throughout the foyer and corridors of the campus.  Explore the wonderful art & design on screen, in bespoke furniture, on paper, fabric, clay, metal, paint and many other materials.   Follow the creative trail throughout CSN College ground floor this summer.

‘Sense Ability’ is the best of our graduate portfolios.  Wonder at the students' minds behind this collection of art and design work.  This is a celebration of CSN students who have developed new skills and honed their creative energy in well-executed work.  They deserve great praise for their hard work and determination.  This year we proudly announce they are college ready and many have already secured their place in Third Level Colleges.

CSN STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES

Art, Craft and Design QQI Level 5

Matthew McCarthy CSN Art and Design student

This one year course is well renowned as one of the longest established portfolio courses in the country.  This educational path allows students to explore their options before applying for Third Level.  Learners gain valuable insights into many art and design disciplines before choosing the most suitable college course to suit their preferred career path.

This exciting educational opportunity was taken up by school leavers Matthew McCarthy and Michaela Nagle.  This year they have both prepared a portfolio and are now college ready.

“I had considered applying for Languages at UCC,” says Matthew, “but I thought I might like art better. I figured a year at CSN would help me make my mind up one way or the other. The experience has confirmed that art is what I really have a passion for.  I’ve secured a place on the Fine Art programme at CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, and I’m now committed to pursuing art as a career.”  Matthew McCarthy (p:  086 239 5902)

“I had considered applying for Interior Design, Journalism and Culinary Studies but I wasn’t entirely happy with any of these choices. I knew I wanted to do something that involved art in some way, so I attended the Open Day at CSN and I was amazed at the quality of work on show. I spoke to some of the students; they all spoke very highly of the course and recommended doing it in order to put a strong portfolio together.  When I first started Art, Craft and Design I found some aspects of it, like the still life drawing classes, quite challenging.  But after a while I began to find my own style, and learn about what I want to do in the future.  I have now decided to do Visual Communications at CIT and work towards becoming an illustrator.  I would recommend Art, Craft & Design at CSN to anyone looking to put a portfolio together or wondering whether pursuing a career in the worlds of art or design is right for them.”  Michaela Nagle

Digital Media Two Year BTEC Higher National Diploma

Dion O'Sullivan Digital Media HND, CSN

This diverse and fast-paced course provides professional training in areas of web design, animation, compositing, 3D graphics, visual effects, and game design.

“I was so excited to hear about the Digital Media HND at CSN College.  I accepted my place and have not looked back.  I am so thrilled to discover that Digital Media is something I can turn into a career and this is my plan.  I find the concept of putting together an entire interactive website or fully functioning application game still utterly fascinating.  Seeing the finished product is even better.  When I learned I could do a one-year top-up course in the UK to get a full Honours BA, I applied immediately and was accepted.  Going abroad to study for a year is both one of the most exciting and daunting things I’d ever had the opportunity to do, and honestly I cannot wait.”

Furniture Design & Making QQI Level 5 & 6

Sarah Joyce and Don Joyce applied to the Furniture Design & Making at CSN College in 2015.

“We are a couple who were both recently made unemployed.  We lost our jobs and were wondering what to do next.  We came to see the end of year show at CSN that year, and we both were so inspired by the course work from Furniture Design & Making.

“I’d worked with carpenters for twenty years,” says Don. “I love wood, and I wanted not just to work for myself, but to work at something I’d love doing that would pay me a living.  I can’t speak highly enough of the teachers here. Sarah and I are building a workshop at our home in Youghal over the summer, and we’re going to start small, buying equipment as and when we can afford it.”  Don Joyce (p: 087 632 7166)

Don Joyce. CSN Furniture student“Most recently, I’d worked in administration, but I’d also done interior design in the past, and I was anxious to return to making.  After two years here, I think it’s safe to say that I’m more product design based production while Don is more focused on designing bespoke furniture.  I’m going to focus on setting up a website and approaching the Enterprise Board to see what help we can get with marketing.  Don and I already had a business plan together coming in to CSN, and we knew what skills we needed to implement it.  We couldn’t be happier with what we’ve learned here.”  Sarah Joyce (p: 086 402 4451)
