Sports, Exercise & Health Studies
Note: Course shadowing as part of work experience is available for this course.
This course is ideal for the student who has an interest in sport and how our diet and lifestyles impact on our health.It provides the learner with the knowledge, skills and practical application to work within the sports and leisure industry and/or to provide a pathway to higher education. The course has been devised with an emphasis on students following the progression opportunities into higher education (see education progression opportunities below). The successful student will leave with their QQI Level 5 award as well as several other certificates for training modules, selected in association with the Irish Rugby Football Union, Irish Sports Council the Football Association of Ireland and Cork Sports Partnership. Exercise and Fitness, which is one of the components, is very important for the student who wishes to pursue a career in gym instruction with the NCEF in the future.

Sports, Recreation and Exercise
One year, full time. Students who are successful in year one may use progression opportunities to higher education.
Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI level 4 qualification.
For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
Satisfactory presentation at interview.
The following subjects may be offered:
- Health Promotion
Examine the importance of raising awareness of a multitude of Health related issues both on an individual and a group/community level. Learning how to organise, deliver and evaluate Health Promotion programmes relevant to target groups in the community.
- Functional Martial Arts Foundation
This module is an overview of a mixture of functional martial art styles, with an emphasis on a coaching point of view. In the first term, students will learn the fundamentals of the striking disciplines (boxing and kickboxing), for both competitive full contact training and non-contact fitness training. The grappling disciplines of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling will be covered in the second term. This section will also emphasise self defence, a common request from clients looking to learn martial arts. With a solid base built, the third term will focus on combining all styles into Mixed Martial Arts. No previous martial arts experience is required. Although, all equipment is provided during the class, students must have their own gum shield, as a precaution.
The purpose of this unit is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the nutritional composition of food and the effects of food and nutrition on an individual’s health and personal well-being.
- Sports & Recreation Studies
This provides students with an overview and understanding of the sport, leisure and recreation industry.
- Exercise & Fitness
This practical unit is designed to provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of safe and appropriate exercise and fitness programmes. Any students who wish to apply for CEHF Fitness Instructors award must achieve a minimum pass grade in exercise and fitness L5.
- Sports Anatomy & Physiology
This subject area provides the learner with an understanding of the working of the human body in sporting contexts.
- Sports Psychology
The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of the key psychological factors that influence participation and performance in sport and exercise. Students will gain knowledge in the areas of imagery, anxiety, arousal, motivation and stress in sport and performance.
- Word Processing
This subject is designed to enable learners to develop their word processing skills. It assists understanding and application of word processing software and file management techniques.
Communication/presentation and leadership skills are highly valued in the workplace. This unit recognises that the acquisition of these skills is a life-long process, and central to personal, social and professional development.
- Work Experience
This unit provides the student with practical experience in a work environment. This will be based specifically in the areas of assisting in performance analysis, strength & conditioning / gyms and dietary analysis. The students will be working in cooperation with school teams / local clubs and fitness facilities in a sport/area of their preference.
- Rugby - Leprechaun Rugby is a fast and exciting modified-contact game of 'touch' rugby designed to assist general physical development, to play an important role in 'games concepts' programs and to introduce the game of Rugby Union to children in a very simplified form and is the formal introductory game to Mini Rugby. The aim is to prepare students, teachers & coaches to introduce the game & develop the fundamental skills of Leprechaun rugby.
- Performance Training
Topics and workshops will cover areas such as functional testing, developing speed, sports specific programming, fitness profiling, performance analysis, periodization training, and tabata training.
- Code of Ethics & Good Practice for Children's Sport – delivered by the Irish Sports Council and Cork Sports Partnership.
- Soccer Kickstart 1 & 2 - This course will give students the skills to coach 6–12 year olds in the game of soccer.
- SAQ Foundation, Level 1, Conditioning, Functional Development Certificates.
- IRB Strength & Conditioning Level 1.
This is designed to provide beginner strength and conditioning coaches with a basic knowledge and understanding and a foundation of practical skills.
Students will be required to undertake 10 days of work experience. Students will gain practical experience in a work environment. This will be based specifically in the areas of assisting in performance analysis, strength & conditioning / gyms and dietary analysis. The students will be working in cooperation with school teams / local clubs and fitness facilities in a sport/area of their preference.
Graduates from this programme may gain employment in leisure centres, community sports facilities, sports development centres, sports coordination in schools, fitness classes performance coaching, sports analysis, professional coaching, working with national governing bodies, strength and conditioning coaching.
390 CAO points can be earned by students on successful completion of this course.

The Course will give the student a wide skill-set that is both practical and theoretical. All sports students will have access to our new gym, which is fully equipped with Technogym CV machines, machine weights and free weights. Also, a full size 3G Astroturf pitch and several playing pitches are used on the course, while remaining practicals will take place in our full-size sports hall.
The course also gives students the opportunity to hear a number of guest lecturers throughout the year including professional athletes in soccer, rugby, athletics, rowing, inter-county GAA coaches and players along with experts from the Irish Sports Council's high performance unit. The Work Experience unit will create valuable contacts for the students and may create opportunity for future employment.
